Help Putting A New Brake Caliper On A Mk5 Fiesta?

I need advice on how to put a brake caliper on my car. Basically i was away to change the front pads and noticed it was wearing away more on one side of the wheel than the other, Got told to pump the brakes and clean it all, but i ended up over doing it and the brake burst and ripped the rubber seal. (A bit of a pain as they dont make seals for that car anymore so it need a whole new caliper). So im going to get one from the scrap yard but not sure how to get the air out the chamber where the brake fluid goes. Any ideas?

Also will i get away with only changing the pads on one side and topping up the brake fluid? The locking nut was overtightened, on the drivers side when it had its mot and now wont budge so cant get into the brakes to drain the fluid out the pipes on that side of the car.Help Putting A New Brake Caliper On A Mk5 Fiesta?Firstly, you can get seal kits for a Fiesta at any car spares %26amp; accessories place. Guaranteed.

The air is bled from brake calipers using the bleed screw on the caliper; if you're unsure, get a Haynes manual. This will give detailed info on caliper stripping, cleaning, rebuilding %26amp; brake bleeding with illustrations.

Finally, ALWAYS change pads as an axle set - both sides MUST be done at the same time.Help Putting A New Brake Caliper On A Mk5 Fiesta?Do yourself and all us other road users a favour and get it repaired professionally before you cause an accident. Brakes are not something to be messed with, a mistake could mean DEATH to you or someone else. Help Putting A New Brake Caliper On A Mk5 Fiesta?Firstly I wouldn't trust a calliper from a scrap yard. Mainly because you don't know if the calliper is working properly and you don't know what transpired to put the vehicle in the scrap yard. Secondly, for tour own safety and of those around you I would change the pads on both sides as will cause uneven breaking which is a mot failure. Thirdly I would get the work done by a competent mechanic or a garage you trust (preferably both) therefore you can be sure the job is done correctly.Help Putting A New Brake Caliper On A Mk5 Fiesta? To be honest with you and please don't take this the wrong way. My advice would be if you don't know have to change a brake calliper, don't do it yourself!

Your brakes are the single most important part of your car because with out them you cannot stop.

How can I 'unfreeze' my brake calipers on my Pontiac Grand Prix?

My mechanic is telling me he can't open the calipers to change the pads or replace the rotor. He is telling me that he has to replace the entire front brake system. I can drive and have functionality because of my rear brakes but am driving very little until I get the front fixed.

Is there a way I can manipulate the calipers to 'unfreeze' them, ie, get them moving again? I have replaced brake pads with no problem in the past so have a little knowledge and am unwilling to pay $500 for what my mechanic says has to be done (at least at this point).

Please note that the car sat with very little driving done for several months, from about May to Oct 2007.How can I 'unfreeze' my brake calipers on my Pontiac Grand Prix?If the mechanic can't get the calipers off because they are frozen they most likely need to be replaced.

If you can get the calipers off, take one off at a time and try pushing the piston back in using a large c-clamp. You can also try pushing on the brake pedal with the caliper off to try to break the piston free before using the c-clamp to push the piston back in. Just make sure you have someone watch the piston to see if it moves and don't push the pedal much or the piston will blow out.

The bottom line is if you are replacing the pads and rotors you will probably end up ruining the new parts prematurely because the old calipers will hang up and destroy the pads, taking out the new rotors. How can I 'unfreeze' my brake calipers on my Pontiac Grand Prix?also remove break line from caliperr and see if fluid comes out by lightly pushing down on break pedal with hand,if u want to bleed breaks, put a piece of 2by4 behind break pedal to avoid damage mastercylinder

How can I 'unfreeze' my brake calipers on my Pontiac Grand Prix?If the front wheel rotates you can remove the caliper. Sometimes a ridge will form on the edge of the rotor, it should just break off or you can grind or file the ridge off. Now rotate the wheel so the removed ridge is under the caliper. The caliper will now come off.

You can replace the calipers and rotors yourself with loaded calipers, new rotors and flexible brake lines(recommended) for less than $200 total. How can I 'unfreeze' my brake calipers on my Pontiac Grand Prix?Re; thebax2006's suggestion to hit the brake pedal with the caliper off the rotor, put some blocks of wood where the rotor (and/or pads) would be, so the piston doesn't pop all the way out. Clean and adjust rear brakes?

i took my car to get something fixed and they fixed the part that was broken... but they also gave me a list of recommendations. they said i need to get my rear brakes cleaned and adjusted. i have a 2007 toyota corolla. i don't really want to spend the 60 dollars they said it was going to cost to do it through them and was wondering if anyone would be able to explain how i can do it myself. i know how to change the brake pads on the front brakes. im just not sure what they mean by %26quot;adjust%26quot; the rear brakes. the cleaning part i know you just spray brake cleaner on there.. but how do i adjust my rear brakes?Clean and adjust rear brakes? It is a rip off scam. Your brakes are self adjusting. Very seldom would any brake systems on cars made in the last 35+ years need external adjustment.

All they would do is spray a can of brake cleaner spray onto the surfaces and let that dry. I would not waste your money on that.

Save the money and use it when it is time to replace the brake pads.

ADDED: If looking through the wheel you see a bright shiny surface like the front rotor then you have rear disk as well.Clean and adjust rear brakes?spend the extra 60 and in the future use the parking brake to adjust the rear brakes.they adjust when you apply the parking brake.Clean and adjust rear brakes? If they are rear drum brakes, cleaning them I recommend water, just spray them off. Now to adjust them, there should be a rubber plug on the backing plate. Remove this plug and there is a star wheel inside that is attached to an adjusting mechanism. One way tightens the brakes, the other way loosens them, of course you want to tighten them til you feel a slight drag when spinning the drum with your hand. Now, this was really easy to type but not so easy to do. 60 bucks is crazy for someone to adjust your rear brakes. I use to do it for free when I replaced the front brakes. I am sure you have a ton of questions now =)Clean and adjust rear brakes?Seems odd you'd have clean rear brakes especially if they are drum brakes unless the adjuster is not turning. Usually rear drum brakes adjust when you drive backwards %26amp; pump the brake pedal, but I'm not positive with a late model car. You might want to give this a try %26amp; see if you notice any difference before paying the 60$ If you can change the pads yourself I'm sure removing the adjuster %26amp; cleaning it up %26amp; puting anti-seize on the threads, shouldn't be a problem for you, or just check it to see if it turns freely. You may need a special tool depending on the location of the hole for the adjustment or pull the wheel %26amp; drum. Hope this helps.Clean and adjust rear brakes? How many miles do you have on the car??And are the rear brakes drums or disc?I work at a honda dealership, clean and adjust for disc there consists of lubricating the slide pins, cleaning off the shims the pads sit on, its mainly a preventative maintenance to ensure your braking system is well lubricated so you maintain even pad wear.As far as rear brakes go , they spray them down with brake clean to help clean them, their will be a adjusting star wheel, you just turn that with a screw driver and slap the drum back on, (not sure if theres an acess on the backing plate for your model car not all have them)

that's where the experience of a tech comes in to play, because you need to make sure you are getting good surface contact. But put the drum back on and hit it in the 12 and 6 o clock position and spin it if it still sits loose take the drum off and repeat it Again. But Again that's where experience from the tech to come in to play.Clean and adjust rear brakes?80% of your braking is done off the front pads you will usually go through 2 to 3 sets of pads before the rears need replacing i would not worry about cleaning are adjusting them wait till you need new shoes. You are in no danger and are not going to cause any harm to your rear shoes.Clean and adjust rear brakes? That model has rear drum brakes and also has self adjusters on them. If you will take the car to an empty parking lot somewhere and do the following. Make sure you have plenty of room behind you and no one nearby that could get in the way. Put the car in reverse and start backing up to about 15 mph and apply the brakes firmly and come to a stop. Do this about 6 to 8 times. Do not let the tires lock up or skid. Brakes are adjusted. Do this about 2 or 3 times a year to keep them adjusted. $60.00 saved.

How do I change the rear disc brakes on a ford focus st170 52 plate?

Hi I have changed the front disc and pads on my ford focus st170 but the back are a nightmare I gather I have to somehow adjust the cylinder back (that looks like a castle) but after turning it and turning it I am not getting anywhere does anyone here know how to do it?How do I change the rear disc brakes on a ford focus st170 52 plate?you need a tool to do this properly, its like a mini threaded press that forces piston back as it winds.if you try using molegrips or similar you usually end up damaging the piston seal and then after a while it will start to stick,

you can buy this tool for about 20, halfords or somewhere, aslo fits a few other makes too. if you dont lay out money for it then it will cost you more if youre pistons seize up.

basically you need to force piston back at the same time as you turn it,( clockwise)How do I change the rear disc brakes on a ford focus st170 52 plate? The rear calliper pistons screw back in but they are left had threaded so you need to turn them the %26quot;wrong%26quot; way to get them back in.While your turning them put thumb pressure on the centre of the piston to get it going back in Once its fully back in and slipping over the brake pads turn it out again until it just grips the pads. Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?

1) My mechanic said my front brake pads are worn and need to be replaced soon. I think he said they were down to 1/32%26quot;. The quote for this job was about $180 ($50 for parts, the rest for labor). But I haven't heard any sounds from my brakes - do all cars have that %26quot;indicator%26quot; sound, or may my car not?

2) My brakes also vibrate a bit (pedal) when at higher speeds. He said this is caused by the rear drum brakes being out of line or uneven or something - He can machine/adjust those for about $90. Is that necessary and/or reasonable?

3) About how often would I need to change my brake pads?

I have a 99 Mazda protege and live in Denver CO , and drive about the avg amount i'd say.

ThanksDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?Mazda's have a reputation for squeaking brakes but that can also be a sign that they are going bad and need to be replaced. Get them checked before you ruin the rotor. That's expensive to replace.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?well i think you think you should get it checked out. i don't think its that big of a deal cause all cars squeak on occashionsDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced? From what I've learned yesDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?yesDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced? My uncle is a service manager at a high end dealer and he says that not all breaks squeak when they need replacing. If you are doubting what they told you go and get another estimate elsewhere. And yes removal of the vibration is necessary... Brakes are pretty important to me when I am flying down the road, I really don't want to take any chances of them failing... that has happened to me once and it wasn't a nice feeling.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?Brake pads need to be checked on a yearly basis. What you mechanic said is true. Even if you don't hear a sound from your brakes doesn't mean they don't need to be replaced. When you start hearing a sound it could be too late.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced? They should. Honda has tabs built in so when you hear the squealing, you are not actually wearing out your brakes, you are just being warned before they becomes unsafe.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced? Not all make the sound. Some brake pads have a built-in %26quot;indicator%26quot; - a piece of metal that scrapes to make a noise when your pads are worn too thin. Some don't.

1/32%26quot; is VERY thin - replace them right away.

The vibration is more likely your front discs being warped. If they will machine both the front rotors (discs) and the rear drums for $90, that's not too bad. For just the rear drums it may be a little high.

Brake pads (front wear much more) should last at least 20,000 miles, and perhaps as much as 60,000. Rear brakes will probably go 80,000.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?advise you to check some more prices. on the expensive side. vibration at different speeds can be due to warpage in the front rotors. they can be machined. can't give you an honest answer on how long since everyone drives differently. they, the brakes--especially disc--, should have a metal squeeker or squealer to let you know. 1/32 is extremely bad and needs to be fixed. on driving an average, does not indicate how you or others drag on the the brakes...amount of time and pressure on the pedal. hope this helps.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?50 dollars for parts on a 99 Protege, the same car my wife drives, is way too much. I would take it someone else and get a 2nd opinion.

The squealing sound doesn't always mean that your brakepads are wearing down. That sound can come from brake dust, heat, or even rust on the rotor. In many cases when the pad wears down to the point where it's just metal on metal contact you'll get a squealing sound, but not if there's any pad left.

After working for some time with mechanics, I can very safely tell you that there are a good 80% who are trying to rip you off. Take your car somewhere else and get the job done there.

If you're getting any kind of backfeed or pressure returned to your petal when braking you will need to get your drums adjusted. 80-90 is a fair price for that.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced? Most cars have wear indicators, but some brake pad manufacturers dont put them on their pads and sometimes they break off. So, sometimes they dont squeal. $180.00 is a fair price. Vibration can be caused by drums and rotors being out of round. The test is while driving around 50, LIGHTLY apply the parking break. If the car vibrates then yes the problem is the rear brakes. Drums can be machined to repair this condition. Rotors should be replaced tho. Autozone sells inexpensive rotors and they work well. Brake pads generally need to be replaced about 40,000 miles, depending on driving habits.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?mst cars have what the call a scrapper when your pads get low it rides on the disk , the front. making a noise so you can get er done. go for the front pads first, see how it goes if the pulsation persists then go for the rear. front pads average 40 to 60 thousand rear shoes about 80 depending of course how and the condition that you driveDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?they do if they have a squeeler on them, but sometimes thats not the case, you might have brake dust, that will make them squeel too.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?some cars do have low pad indicators some dont if ur down to 1/32 its time and for ur high speed brakeing vibratios it is either ur rotors or drums out of round or rotors warped change them not that expensive

  • 4 Wheel disc brake service?

First of all, my car is 1990 Mazda Miata MX-5

And I also live in so california in la mirada around border line of orange county.

How much is it to service my car's brakes(it has 4 wheel disc brakes)?

What shop is most dependable and the cheapest I can go (I am a college student with not much money)?

This time I have to change brake pads on all 4 wheels and replace 2 rear rotors and resurface on front rotors. And I plan to diagnose my braking system cause i think my brakes arn't wearing out evenly when i look into my tire rims. I think i'll also need a brake oil flush too but im not too sure.

I am actually planning to go to sears auto in brea mall to service my brakes. Is it a good idea?

My family has been getting new tires to replace the worn ones for few years and i think they do a good job.

But I want to also know if there are any other cheaper shops that does a good job on brakes.

And once again, How much would my brake service cost on average with 2 rotors replaced with all 4 brake pads?

Thanks in advanced! :)4 Wheel disc brake service?going to sear is a good idea. i have use then before and they do a good job.

Brake pad and rotor change advice?

    Mazda astina 1991.

Mechanic says my brake pads need replacing, they are 19mm, the minimum thickness is 20mm. Should i be worried, how quick do they wear down?

My quote states x2 brake pads, one $76, the other $93. Why isn't he using the same type of pads? Also, is he assuming i want the best quality ones, should i ask for cheaper?

Plus x4 rotors, $57 each. But he told me only the fronts needs replacing. Are there 2 rotors per wheel?

    labour $130

    total AUD$530

    !!

I have not noticed any vibrating or warping. Only a put-put-put kind of shaking sometimes, when i change gears, just feels like it's a bit cold, and i'm not using the brakes at that time.

Might get another mechanic to just replace pads and check how damaged the rotors are.Brake pad and rotor change advice? From your listed prices you've been quoted cheap off-shore brake rotors. Do the job yourself and save $200.00!Brake pad and rotor change advice? You really need to get another quote. Brake pad and rotor change advice?his quote is for a four wheel brake job... the pads come in sets for front and rear.... not individual wheels... even though he said the rears may be thick enough now most shops will machine them to make sure they are not warped - if there is a warp they try to machine it out and then they may be to thin... so just to cover their butt they include new ones in the estimate... there are a few shops that just replace them though so always make sure to check the bill before you pay

I do mine myself and can't machine the rotors so they just get replaced... depending on how you drive they should last 20,000 to 40,000 miles... if they can be machined at that point then you may get more out of them... hope this helps and good luck with itBrake pad and rotor change advice? You are a dangerous breed my friend. 20mm is spec and your at 19mm... Here if your involved in an accident and your car is inspected and found to be lacking in the brake area you get charged with criminal negligence.

The estimate is in the ballpark.

    Corolla spongy brakes?

i just changed the front disc brake pads and rotors on my 2000 corolla and the mechanic said the rear drums still have 45% left on them so i didn't have the rear changed. I'm not exactly sure if this problem was present before the brake change or not but i noticed that my brake is really spongy and i have to press it about 90% down to get a good brake response and after 90% it is really stiff and makes it hard for me to judge how hard i am braking before locking the wheels. This is important cause my car lacks ABS. I have heard that changing the brake fluid and bleeding the lines helps my brakes be more sharper and less spongy but my receipt from the brake job indicates that they did change the brake fluid and did bleed the lines!? so im wondering whether i should take it to toyota instead and ask them to bleed the line and change the brake fluid or just to ask them to inspect the brakes? i know there is a 80$ diagnostic charge if no problem is found and im wondering whether i should risk it?Corolla spongy brakes?just drive it it will get betterCorolla spongy brakes?whoever changed your brake pads and rotors must have not followed the proper procedure to bleed brakes. OR did it half assed. i suggest taking it back to them, and telling them politely to do it again, or have a technician try and press the brakes and see what he thinks about it. if its obvious to you , it should be obvious to him. if u took it to a good shop, theyll re do it for you at no cost.Corolla spongy brakes?you may have air in your brakes system, noot a big deal just bleed the brakes, did you remove a caliper when you did the change,it could also just e the brakes you got,did you go cheap?cause you get what you pay for,

Why have both front brakes seized up on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee???

The brake pads were changed about 1 month ago, but until yesterday, the truck was driving fine. Now all at once, both front brakes have seized up and I'm trying to figure out why. It doesn't make sense that both calipers would fail at EXACTLY the same time. My father suggested that the master cylinder is bad, but I don't want to jump to conclusions...

Has anyone ever had this problem before? What should I check first? And if all else fails, how can I be positive that the master cylinder is bad?

The metal brake lines were recently changed and flushed by the dealer, and there is plenty of fluid in the master cylinder. Any and all opinions are very much appreciated!

Thank you in advance. Why have both front brakes seized up on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee???This happens alot. DOT 3 brake fluid absorbs moisture over time a corrosion ridge forms on the caliper bore and or piston. Water is heavier than brake fluid and falls to the lowest point in the system. When you push the caliper piston back to install the new thicker pads the piston seal is now riding in the area of corrosion. The seal can only flex so far to release. The brakes %26quot;sieze%26quot; because the piston is stuck in this area of corrosion instead of being free in the bore.. Crack the bleeder, if the piston presses back easy it is a brake hose, if it still wont press back it is a caliper problem. Why have both front brakes seized up on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee???that is pretty suspect. Check for any recalls on that. I had a 97 and got new rotors for free from a recall. Just trying to save you any money i can. Why have both front brakes seized up on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee???bleed them then change master cylinderWhy have both front brakes seized up on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee???Please add more to the definition of %26quot;siezed up%26quot;. I have had a similar problem in the past. When you apply the brakes, they seem to drag, heat up, and smell like burning. It took me a long time to figure out that the problem was the rubber hoses that go from the metal lines to the wheel cylinders. The lining deteriorates and debris from this acts like a one-way check valve. Fluid pressure that applies the brakes gets trapped in the cylinder and keeps the brakes on. Bleeding the brake lines doesn't help. When the bleeders are cracked open, fluid squirting out under pressure is an indication that this is the problem.

It is most likely not the master cylinder.

Cbr f4 rear brake caliper problem?

i have a 1999 cbr f4 i changed the brake pads in the front and they work fine the problem i am having is with the rear caliper no matter how many times i pump and bleed them they dont compress the calipers seem to be stuck what should i doCbr f4 rear brake caliper problem?Maybe hold the brake pedal down with something and undo the reservoir top. Leave it overnight and any bubbles present that won't bleed through will exit the system via the open cap.

If this doesn't help take the caliper off and check the piston is actually moving when the pedal is pressed. Without pads it should be possible to pump the piston right out of the caliper, but stop before this happens. Clean the piston with WD40, push it back, then see if it moves out easier than before when the pedal is pressed.Cbr f4 rear brake caliper problem?Have you tried taking the caliper off and holding it so the hose has a gradual upward slope to the caliper so the air can travel up to the caliper and then be pumped out. Don't hold the bleed nipple higher than the bottom of the reservoir or it will flow backwards. Try gravity bleeding it rather than pumping it first, keep the fluid topped up, if air goes in due to low level, you will have to start all over again. It may be that your caliper piston is stuck, did it go back smoothly when you fitted the pads? Good luck.

Always change brakes in pairs. How long to change brakes?this should not take long 30 min if no problems 1 hour at the most i would change both rotors instead of just 1 and change both wheels brake pads if not the will wear wrong. How long to change brakes?30 minHow long to change brakes?Over the years, when my husband and I were still together, I helped him change the brakes to our vehicles a few times. Between the two of us it took less than 20 min to change the brakes and add just a little longer for the rotor. It took us about another 30 min to change the rotors but we did not have the proper tools. The added time was mostly spent finding tools. At a mechanic, who should have great tools, I don't expect that they would take more than an hour. If it's only one person doing the job, give them an extra 30 min or so. Hope I could help! :)How long to change brakes?a half hour at the most, why would you put brake pads on just 1 wheel? How long to change brakes?Just do it yourself. Any bozo can throw on a rotor and some brake pads. If you can change a flat tire, you can do this.

Can you answer my Toyota questions?

How come my 12 year old Toyota 2wd Hilux regular cab 5 speed manual truck with 98,000 miles, which cost 1/3 the cost of my Dad's 11 year old Ford F-150 extra cab truck with a bigger motor than mine, automatic and 82,000 miles did new. Has the same blue book?

How come I launched my truck off of a 6 foot mound of dirt into a 20 foot tall pile of hay barrels, and nothing broke?

How come at 98,000 miles all I had to do to my truck was change the front brake pads?

How come this thing won't die?

I won't buy a new truck untill this dies, but it just seems like I can't kill it.

I ring its neck, I drive 40mph over speedbumps, driveway dips, up curbs down curbs, through mud, bushes, off loading docks, but the truck just keeps going. I haven't even changed the oil in a year. Why won't it Die?!?!?!Can you answer my Toyota questions?Had the same problem with my Dodge Rams, one lasted for 180,000 miles(1995) and then sold it and bought another that lasted for 400,000 miles(2001 diesel). They just won't die!Can you answer my Toyota questions?BECAUSE IT IS A TOYOTA.Can you answer my Toyota questions?Pull the plug off of the oil pan and drive it down the interstate at 90mph for a little bit. That should do the trickCan you answer my Toyota questions? You are lucky. Can you answer my Toyota questions?no need to ask

ford %26lt; toyotaCan you answer my Toyota questions?just run over it with a chevyCan you answer my Toyota questions?the tiny toyota truck frames were built strong, they are basic pickups with very little frills, the 4 banger motor is built very well and doesn't have a lot of extra parts in it. It's pretty simplistic actually. Just keep the oil changed, it'll last a long while, as is with pretty much any car.

the Ford Ranger frame is just as strong as the toyota's. both truck are favorites for off road short track racers because they can handle abuse.

Is toyota a more reliable truck? the answer is NO. they have their share of problems like any other truck. Sensors go bad, accessories break, etc...

the motor itself is built well, if you think about it, the motors in most car, foreign and American are built very well, it's the accessories that don't last as long, (i.e. starters, alternators, etc..). It all depends on what you do with the car and how you treat it.

There's a guy who was profiled in Consumer Reports magazine that has a 94 Ranger with the 3.0L engine and has over 500,000 miles. This guy knows how to take care of his truck. He said he has had very little problems, and just puts oil %26amp; tires in it.

It's all about how the car is taken care of, or lack thereof. Can you answer my Toyota questions?Eric F is right to a degree, but that is an unusual case even for a Ford Ranger owner that drives carefully and is meticulous with their trucks. Toyota trucks have been known to reach 500K miles regularly. Go to Toyota's 200,000+ Miles Club and you will see how long Toyotas last. Most of the 500K+ mile vehicles are the Trucks like yours. The 22R engines weren't powerhouses but they are tough and reliable. That's why they are very popular in third world nations. You will see them travelling across Australian deserts, the savannas of Africa, brutal almost non existant roads in the Amazon, other parts of Central America, the Middle East- practically anywhere in the world. Even the Diesel versions can take a lickin and are seen in these areas as well. Toyota Celicas and the Camry's predecessor, the Toyota Corona has been powered by this engine at one time or another. Some of these Toyota trucks are pushing 1 million miles with the original, non-rebuilt engines. Good luck killing it. It is an %26quot;old skool designed%26quot; cast iron, pushrod engine that has the charm of a Chevy 350- low cost parts, reliable, and they are abundant. Also, they are easily stolen. That's another way of getting rid of it if you wanted to.Can you answer my Toyota questions? The guy above me is right about a couple of things except for one thing. the R engine used in the Toyota Truck is not a pushrod design(As used in corollas and starlets) it is a SOHC design that was developed from the WWII Jeeps and made better through Toyota

How do I fix a low/mushy break pedal?

I had to change the front brake pads in my 95 chevrolet beretta a couple of days ago. I bled the tires then added in more brake fluid. When I pressed the brake pedal it went to the floor and didn't stop the car from moving.

The next day I bled all four tires and got a little more stopping power but the pedal is still touching the floor. The calipers were squeezing the rotors. This time I noticed that the amount of brake fluid in my reservoir pretty much stayed the same since the previous bleeding.

What could be causing the problem? Is it the master cylinder or did I not bleed it enough? How do I fix a low/mushy break pedal? You need to have somebody help you bleed the brakes until you get all the air out.

Sometimes this can be frustrating but keep after it until all the air is out.How do I fix a low/mushy break pedal?if you didn't follow the bleeding procedure it could do thatHow do I fix a low/mushy break pedal?First off make sure you have the back brakes if they are drum brakes set up and adjusted properly using the adjuster wheel on each one, set them so the brakes are dragging just a little against the brake drums, next you need to bleed the brakes in proper sequence, passenger side rear first, drivers side rear, passenger side front and finally drivers side front and don't let the fluid run out in the master cylinder while bleeding, keep it filled up, keep bleeding until you don't see any air bubbles coming out on each wheel. How do I fix a low/mushy break pedal?i agree with brian you didnt bleed them in the correct order

  • What would be best OEM brake pads for MAZDA?

Im looking on ebay to buy some brake pads for my mazda 626 97 fwd FRONT manual. I was wondering what i should buy raybestos OEM??? CERAMIC METTALIC SEMI ORGANIC??? Everyone says oem is the best... i want something just as good and some breaks that dont squeek. i change my pads every year on my other car, so it doesnt matter how long they last as long as they are good and dont squeek. What would be best OEM brake pads for MAZDA?you change pad every year? there's something wrong with your brake rotor.

i would say go with ceramic it does not heat up so much and cool down fast and its quieter since its ceramic and less wear on rotors and padsWhat would be best OEM brake pads for MAZDA?By OEM they mean %26quot;original equipment manufacturer%26quot;. Meaning, you need to go to the Mazda dealership to get them, unless the pads were manufactured by the same company selling them as %26quot;OEM%26quot; at the parts store. What would be best OEM brake pads for MAZDA?By OEM they mean %26quot;original equipment manufacturer%26quot;. New tires and new brake pads for my car?

Hi, I have two questions. Would appreciate if someone can help me.

I recently change four tires on my 2006 Toyota Corolla, I bought the car new and drove approximate 43000 miles. Is that how long Corolla tires can only last? Though they last forever, ppl easily drive to 100000 miles, or they menat the engine?

    2. Secondly, in addition to new tires, I had change some brake parts things on front and back. They were making sounds when I press on the brake, like metals scratching each other, so naturally I went in for inspection, they told me all front and back is bad and need to be changed.

Just wondering if I was really in making the choice of getting 4 new tires and 4 brake parts after only going through inspection at one location? I spent about 800 dollars.New tires and new brake pads for my car? When you go through inspection they usually only glance at brake pads. You could have easily needed them and they would not have noticed. Since they don't test drive the vehicle at inspection they would not have noticed if the wear bars were scraping. Vehicle dealers usually recommend that you change brake every 45,000 miles. As for the tires, the tires they install at the dealers are not always of the best quality. 43,000 miles is a good wear for a set of tires that are factory installed. Tires and brakes are usually not covered under vehicle warranty.New tires and new brake pads for my car?well tires wont last as long as the engine on the car, tires need changed give or take every 50k miles it depends on what kind of tires, each tire has a mile warrantly type thing on it saying its a 50k mile tire or a 60 or 70, and so on. and the brake pads could easily be bad with those miles on it especially front pads if they were metallic brake pads they only last about 30k miles if you are lucky and the ceramics l;ast about 50-60 it really depends on how hard you are on the brakes to how long they will last.New tires and new brake pads for my car?Corolla does not make tires but if you have ground the brakes to metal in 40000 miles you brake late and hard. This is also hard on tires and steering components.

i went to pep boys and they told me i need to fix my front brakes. they told me i have about 30% left on my front brakes and i should change it today. so i was like okay how much does cost to fix it? and they go $450.... are you serious? i mean if i have 30% left on my brakes i dont even have to change rotors right? is it cost that much to just fix pads? where should i go to get the cheapest and reliable job done?Front brake on 03 hyundai tiburon?A lot of shops (WANT) to replace pads, rotors, calipers even if some are not in bad shape, their reason is if you replace all you will brakes like the day it was made. Watch out for these outfits, get a second opinion.Front brake on 03 hyundai tiburon?you need to find a female mechanic in your area, it shouldn't cost that much to slap some pads on it, and to resurface your rotors,Front brake on 03 hyundai tiburon?Get another opinion. How do you unscrew the back caliper bolts for a 2002 mustang?

How do you unscrew the back caliper bolts for a 2002 mustang. These bolts don't seem to budge. I am trying to change the back brake pads and rotors. I have done the front brakes before and had no problems. Is there a trick I do not know about for the back brakes. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. The car is 2002 ford mustang V6 automatic coupeHow do you unscrew the back caliper bolts for a 2002 mustang?the caliper bolts might have seized... should be some 10 or 13 mm head bolts... but try some penetrent like PB MAX to try and loosen it up first

How do you get the front caliper off of a 1998 Ford Mustang?

The title says it all...I need to change the brake pads and rotors...but I can't get the caliper off.How do you get the front caliper off of a 1998 Ford Mustang?pull the wheel off,two bolts hold the caliper on,after u pull the caliper off,u can see the brake pads sitting in the caliper bracket,u can just pull those off,if u need to get to the rotors,u gotta take two more bolts out of the bracket, the rotor should just pull off or u might have to smack it with a hammer that is if its a pull of rotor,if its a rotor with wheel bearing in it u gotta take the dust cap off and take the nut off and along with the bearing, its fairly simple, hope that helps. How do you get the front caliper off of a 1998 Ford Mustang? You'll need 1/2 inch metric sockets and a minimum of a 12 inch ratchet. If a 12 inch ratchet doesn't get the bolts loose on the caliper and caliper bracket get a 16%26quot; breaker bar. To collapse the caliper piston before trying to remove the caliper from the caliper bracket use a carpenters screw clamp or a monster c-clamp.How do you get the front caliper off of a 1998 Ford Mustang? The calipers are held on by two bolts, the bolts have to come out of the caliper to come off that bracket. If you got that done and your having trouble getting the caliper off the rotor then you have to take some care and try to pry it off. The brake pads have worn down around the outer edge of the rotor and cant get passed a small lip that has built up there. Drain some brake fluid out of the caliper and see if that helps. That bracket has to come off, it might of had some lock-tite used on it. That will need some heat on it from a torch or a electric paint stripper to get the bolt loose.

  • Can anyone help me with my brakes on 2001 accord v6 ex?

    what

hi recently i was trying to change my front brake pads and I striped one of the caliper screws .dont ask how but one of the pads fell out and i was driving the car using e brake to stop when i finally did get the caliper off and depressed the pin brake fluid started shooting out from the piiston which would tell me its shot and needs to be replaced.yesterday i changed out all the rotors and pads all around and bleed the system and brakes were working fine but i smelled a burning smell like rubber coming from front wheel(the one that i had the issue with the caliper)..do i have to replkace the caliper and is this why it smells like burning? helpCan anyone help me with my brakes on 2001 accord v6 ex?you say your smelling something coming from the brake pads ? it,s probably that the pads have,nt had time to set to the rotors. mine does that too until the pads gets harden up and set to the rotors. keep driving it and the smell should go away. Can anyone help me with my brakes on 2001 accord v6 ex?If your brake pedal is good and you are not loosing brake fluid, you may be OK. The smell may just be left over brake fluid burning off from earlier. however, if you notice the pedal slowly going to the floor or fluid level in the master going down, then you will need to replace the caliper since the piston seal may be damaged. Can anyone help me with my brakes on 2001 accord v6 ex?Here we have another example of a person that thinks he's a mechanic.

Working on your vehicle and driving with brakes that fail because you don't know what you're doing will kill someone if not yourself!!!

Going to play Dentist next? Can anyone help me with my brakes on 2001 accord v6 ex?If I read you correctly - you have changed out the rotors as well as the pads after the fluid leak. If that is correct then your problem is probably the fact that the seal in the caliper that was leaking is still leaking. What you're smelling would be the burning brake fluid.

You said you bled the system after replacing the rotors and pads? Normally when doing this you should have noticed the fluid leaking from that caliper piston. Considering that you may not have noticed the leak, my guess is that its still there and changing out the calipers should take care of the problem. Be sure to check the pads for signs of fluid contamination. If they've been soaking up leaking fluid (very probable) change them too.

Don't try to get those bolts too tight, there's a torque limit set by the manufacturer. Can anyone help me with my brakes on 2001 accord v6 ex?well most likey its the brake pads your smelling redo your work an dmost likely replace caliber not much harder than what s you have done so far

Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?

I changed the front rotors and pads in my 02' Prizm myself, with great success. I just researched how the pads, rotors and calipers work together and how they are housed and bam I bought a couple jack stands, and a jack and I changed my front disc brakes for the first time, taking about 1.5 hrs. Now this car has drum brakes in the back, and I wanted to know how much harder is that to replace for someone like me you think? I now know how drum system's work, and have all the tools to change the brakes, but i wanna get an idea of what i should be expecting. Also if you have done this, is there any advice you would give me? Thanks! Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?Take a picture of the shoes, springs and all the other stuff BEFORE you take it apart.

    You can do it.

    Got a spring brake tool?

    And retainer tool?

You can do it without them, but it's a bugger getting it all back together.

Oh, and a brake adjuster spoon too.Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes? If you are doing it for the first time it is best to jack up both sides of the car and set on jack stands pull both wheels and drums and use one side as a reference to put the other side back together a few more parts than the front pads but it is easy to do. This is how i learned many many years ago.Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?I agree, do one side at a time and use the other as a reference. Its not as easy as disc brakes but you should be able to figure it out. Plan on it taking longer than a few hours your first time Good luck! Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes? You'll need a few drum brake tools - a tool to release and reinstall the springs and a tool to install the keepers against the shoes.

Disassemble one side at a time and lay the springs out on the floor in the position that you removed them. It's good to have the other side as a guide if you get confused (keep in mind, it's a mirror image - left to right is reversed).

Put a little dab of grease on the tabs where the shoes ride against the backing plate, check the self adjuster for proper operation, slap the drum back on and you should be good to go.

If the pedal seems lower than usual, try tapping the brake while you back up - this will self adjust the brakes. Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?its a pain in the *** getting it back together..disc brakes are a breeze compared to drums. need a spring tool of course. also when putting the drum back on the shoes mess with the star wheel to get the shoes to just be scraping the drum by a hair. good luckAre changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?Easier if you are just going to change the drums, just take the old one off and replace it with the new one. But if you are talking about doing the whole back break system, then yes it can be, only because you have to take it a part and put it back together the right way. If you know how it works then you have it half beat.

The only thing I can tell you that will make a difference is that, you should take your time and clean every thing as clean as possible.

Make sure you clean or replace the masters as well as the shoes of course and make sure to bleed the entire system when you are done starting with the one that is farthest from the master break cylinder in the engine compartment which will be the right rear wheel.

    Good luck....peace....

New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly?

I have a 03 Saturn L200. After changing the front Brakes and Rotors went for a quick ride to see how they worked I immediatley was getting this rubbing sound. I am not sure if it is just that the brake pads need to wear a little with the new rotors or If we made a mistake or we were given the wrong parts but it is quite noisy and it is constant. I have driven roughly 10 miles since the new ones were put on. The Brakes work fine but its just when I am driving I am pretty sure the Brake pads ,because they are new a re rubbing against the rotors.

Anyone experience this or have any idea what the problem could be?New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly?the only thing I can think of is the calipers are sticking a little and not pulling back far enough, just guessing.New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly?Since there new wait a week or so they will grind down sometimes the factory's make them ever so slightly big. and they will rub. but they will grind down after a while.

it takes an average of 100 miles to wear in. give or take.New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly? They are supposed to be in constant contact, but quiet. If it's older your caliper could be sticking and misaligning the pads. I would take it apart and check things out. Make sure there's no crud stuck on the pads. Check the condition of the caliper slides. If they're pitted or not smooth it will wreak havoc. You shouldn't hear anything. A little squeal when applying brakes is normal when new pads heat up and glaze too quickly but sounds like something different in your case. Make sure a pad isn't in backwards.New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly?well you need to make sure you were given the right pads. if theyre wrong and are thicker than the correct pads, theyll rub. it could be that your caliper is sticking. could be that the pads were not put on straight (level) so one corner of them is rubbing the rotor. there are so many possibilities, its tough to tell exactly. brake pads should NEVER need to %26quot;wear a little%26quot;. start by making sure you were given the right pads and rotors once you confirm that...mechanic? sorry.New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly?I would jack up the car and re-check your work.Make sure the brake calipers are not sticking, and ALL the caliper and rotor hardware is properly installed (slider pins or wedges, anti rattle clips, caliper bolts, etc).Make sure the rotors are properly seated on the hubs also.

Why have both front brakes seized up on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee???its possible its the master. open the hood, leave the lines on the master cylinder and take the two nuts off and slide the master cylinder toward the front of the car an inch, see if the front wheels free up, then bolt it back up to the booster and crack the two lines. brakes are a safety issue that should be repaired by professionalsWhy have both front brakes seized up on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee???ABS sensor?

  • Brake pads+rotors+calipers?

Hi, I went to my car dealership today to get oil change %26amp; tire inspection and they said I need new brake pads, both front and rear (5mm left? how bad is that? they said it's fine now but I should get it at my next maintenence service)

I said why, I just replaced (or re-surfaced? don't remember...) my brake rotors and calipers about a year ago (at Firestone) and they said the mechanics who did it last year should've really done rotors, calipers and brake pads all together at the same time, not separate. And that it's kind of a wast of money when you do it (separately) like that.

Is it true that pads, rotors, calipers %26quot;must%26quot; be done simultaneously? Is it the fact that I only did rotors/calipers that caused my brake pads worn out so quick?

They're saying I'll need about $800 to get all three done (along with some other little stuff to make my brakes fine) Is this reasonable?

I understand dealership might rob you like crazy sometimes and it's not the best place to go but I kind of like this particular location dealership they've been pretty honest according to my past experience. Even today, I told them to let me know if I need to get new tires and they said it's perfectly fine even though I have over 52000 mile on it and never replaced any one before (is this normal? seems like they last forever! I thought you replace it every two year or so...)

I also asked to get tire rotation but they said it's not needed at this point. even though I got it at pretty much all my oil change services (every 5000 mile)?

I drive Scion tc 2006, any feedback would be greatly appreciated~

Thanks all for reading this super long question ;)Brake pads+rotors+calipers?%26gt; I just replaced (or re-surfaced? don't remember...) my brake rotors and calipers about a year ago (at Firestone) and they said the mechanics who did it last year should've really done rotors, calipers and brake pads all together at the same time, not separate. And that it's kind of a wast of money when you do it (separately) like that.

You can replace the brakes FEW times before resurfacing the rotors (I do this all the time). But most of the time, if you are going to resurface the rotor, they always replace the brakes. That way the NEW rotor surface last longer.

    ====

All this is moot. Brakes jobs are VERY standard. There's NO reason to do them at the dealership. Go to ANY garage or brake shop. Even a rank 1st year mechanic can do brakes.

That was the FIRST thing I learned to do.

    ====

Also since the rotors were resurfaced before you PROBABLY don't need to do it again. The dealers are FAMOUS for OVER estimating the problem. They say that they want to COMPLETELY fix a problem (yeah - at your cost !!!! ).

Good luck.......Brake pads+rotors+calipers? You do NOT have to do all three simultaneously, in fact its a waste of money to do so.

Calipers should never go bad and therefore never need to be replaced.

Rotors should only need to be turned if you warped them, either from overheating the brakes or going too long with worn out pads.

Brake pads go a couple years if not abused so you probably dont need them yet. In addition, you change the rear brake pads/shoes only once every other time you change the front ones.

Always bleed the brakes after all services, and thats the only %26quot;other little stuff%26quot; involved. It should only cost about $20.

$800 is quite ridiculousBrake pads+rotors+calipers?if the rotors are not scored then just change the pads calipers only need doing if they leak oil brake pads replace at 1.0mm you may have someone who can help you change your brake pads / pads must be replaced in pairs eg. both front pads , both rear padsBrake pads+rotors+calipers?$800 for a brake job is way too much.

I never go to the %26quot;stealership%26quot; unless I need parts that I can't get from anywhere else.

You don't need to replace pads and rotors simultaneously. I've never heard of anyone resurfacing calipers.

The pads will ware down faster than the rotors. As long as the rotors aren't cracked, warped, or damaged, there really isn't any reason to replace them. (The price difference between resurfacing and buying new rotors are very minimal, so just buy new rotors)

Once you hear a squeaking noise when you apply the brakes, that's when you'll know you need to get new brake pads. (There's a metal bar that comes in contact with the rotor which causes the noise)

Oil changes should be done every 3 months or 3000 - 5000 miles, or which ever comes first.Brake pads+rotors+calipers?Pads need to be replaced. Rotors can be replaced or machined(if they're not too thin). The mechanic can measure it. The calipers just need to be greased, but they really shouldn't charge you much for that if they're changing the pads already. Afterward, they should bleed or flush you brake fluids depending how old it is. The rotors should be good for 2 or 3 sets of pads before replacing. I don't generally have my rotors machine between pad changes, but you can check with your fingers to see if there are any deep grooves.

It's not a difficult job so I recommend you look into aftermarket parts and another shop to do the job. You probably just need the front brakes changed and bleed all 4 brakes. I've used Napa rotors and they work fine for about 1/4 the cost of factory rotors.Brake pads+rotors+calipers?if the rotors were replaced so should have the pads been replaced you never replace rotors with out replacing pads and yes calipers go bad all the time especially dodges ive replaced more stuck dodge calipers than any other brand and if the plenomic piston sticks yes it is very possible that it could/would ruin both rotor and pads but on the other hand its very common to replace just pads so if its 2006 model wouldn't caliper be a warranty issue no i wouldnt pay overpriced dealership pricesbut on the other hand i would expect brakes to last more than a year

hope this helpsBrake pads+rotors+calipers?$800..... NO they are LYING to you... you never have to change the calipers.... new pads wont be much and the rotors shouldne be much either if you are replacing them, if you replace all 4 rotors and new pads it shouldnt be over $300....Brake pads+rotors+calipers?By the book every time you replace brake pads you should resurface or change your brake rotors. If the caliper's aren't bad (as in not seized, leaking and working fine) then they don't need to be replaced but the can and DO go bad. Can you change pads but not resurface your rotors? Yes but they will not perform as well or as long as they would if you did resurface or replace. Remember these are brakes not spark plugs they save your life all day long, they are worth throwing a little extra money at, it's your life and others that rely on it. Plus if there tearing apart the brakes already and you have the money, then it's a very good idea to have them replace the calipers because you will need to one day and you will know you need to, when you press on the brakes and they don't work (worst scenario) or just start to leak. And as for the rotors being under limit in thickness yes that is bad... very bad. That means they are too thin to cool themselves under normal operation, And again these are brakes not spark plugs they are worth the money!

How tricky is it to do a brake job on a 2000 Ford F250 4x4?

I want to know about changing just front pads and rotors on this truck. I've only worked on older cars (1979 and earlier), and I've never done a brake job on anything that had ABS or that was 4 wheel drive. Are there any special tools or procedures I need to be aware of?

I'm trying to help someone out and save them some money by doing the work myself instead of sending them to a mechanic. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks. How tricky is it to do a brake job on a 2000 Ford F250 4x4?I probably shouldn't be telling you how to do this job, but here it goes. Jack up and support the front of the vehicle, making sure the rear wheels are blocked safely. Remove all eight 21mm wheel nuts on both front wheels. Remove the wheels. Turn front wheels fully to the left. Remove the two 17 or 18mm caliper bolts. Remove the caliper, taking care not to let the caliper hang by the flex hose. You make need to unclip the wheel speed sensor harness from the flex hose clips. With a long johnson bar and 1/2%26quot; drive 21mm socket, loosen and remove the two 21mm brake caliper bracket bolts. Remove the caliper bracket with the brake pads. Using one of the old brake pads and a pair of channel lock pliers, compress BOTH caliper pistons evenly, until both pistons are bottomed out. With a suitably sized hammer, smash the brake rotor off the hub. Clean the hub surface with sandpaper, and apply a light coat of anti-seize to the hub. Install new brake rotor, and secure rotor to hub temporarily with two wheel nuts. Reinstall the caliper bracket with the new pads and anti-rattle clips. Reinstall the brake caliper. Turn wheel all the way to the right, and repeat entire procedure described. Once all is done, PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO MOVE IT. Torque wheel nuts to 140 ft.-lbs. You do not need to disturb anything with the 4x4 system, or ABS for this job. Nor are any special tools required. Hope this helps.

Is it ok to change just one brake rotor?

About a year ago getting my tires changed the mechanic mentioned I need new pads. Sure enough they started to grind soon after. I changed all four front pads. Now less then a year later the grinding is back (was always just on the driver's side). I drive easy, no hard braking or drifting around corners. Is it ok to just change the one rotor? How about the pads? The sales guy also was trying to sell a bunch of extras like cleaner to get the oil off the rotor, replacement grease for the caliper bolts and something else because of the time of year (salt). The rotor box says %26quot;ready to install%26quot;, so do I also really need all that other stuff?

In case it matters: 2002 Saturn SL2 front wheel drive %26lt;100K milesIs it ok to change just one brake rotor? Its fine to do if your broke and only one is giving u the problem but chances are the other isn't far behind. I think your problem is either worn calliper or wheel baring because the problem is only on the 1 side. As for what the sales guy was trying to sell you pretty well bull other than its a good idea to keep the rotor as clean as possible and to keep your calliper bolts or any bolt u might have to take off again with anti seize.

Hope u find this helpfulIs it ok to change just one brake rotor? That %26quot;sales guy%26quot; does NOT sound good to me! Run (don't walk) to the door and say goodbye forever. Make sure to try another independent repair shop you might find by searching the below link. That new garage will remove both your rotors (easy to do) and simply turn them done on a lathe and charge you about $30 plus the cost of the new pads for a total cost of $125. Do the complete front brake job the right way, and you'll pay less and be safer driving in the long run.

the grinding sound that you feel is probably the cause of a warped rotor... this happens when the rotor gets hot when driving then a splash of water hits the rotor or going straight to the car wash after a long drive.

you don't have to buy those brake cleaners or grease.

the rotors are not that expensive anyway and even the brake pads. the expensive one is the %26quot;brake caliper%26quot;... but i don't think that you have a problem with this part.Is it ok to change just one brake rotor? If you're wearing out one side prematurely, there's a reason. You may have a stuck caliper. The caliper must be free to slide side-to-side on the guide pins as the pads wear. If it's sticking, then you'll likely wear out one pad on that side before the others. If the rotor on the other side still has plenty of metal thickness left, then you could just replace one side. BUT you should have the old rotor ground or machined to remove any 'glaze'- that's when the surface gets polished from wear and heat. If you don't remove the glaze the new rotor will grab better than the old one and cause it to pull to one side. You MUST replace ALL the pads at the same time.

You need to clean and lubricate the guide pins (high-quality bearing grease works fine) and the holes where they slide. There's a small rubber seal that keeps out dirt. If the rubber is broken, dirt and water can get in and cause the caliper to stick. Also, you need to use shims behind the pads and pad silencer goop on the shims. Otherwise you'll end up with brakes that squeal.

I changed the front rotors and pads on a 2004 Sunfire.

After everything was done, I stepped on the brakes and the calipers will not squeeze together.

  • Advice on front brake parts and replacing them?

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger. 2wd not sure of 4 or 2 wheel anti-lock. It is the 4cyl, 2.5L. Just would like some advice/help on new rotors and pads for the front, and how to go about changing them.

would it be better to get more expensive rotors or pads? should I just get factor parts? Should I just get some one to do it? I have the tools just not 100% knowledge.Advice on front brake parts and replacing them?Ford brakes are easy to change, jackup your truck, remove the wheel then, look at the caliper, it holds both disk pads in place, look at the sliding bar on top of the breaks you will see two bolts about 1/2 size take these 2 bolts out, then tap the caliper down until the top (where the slide bar is) clears the slot in the top, then pull the caliper off and the old pads will fall out (remember which pad is in and which pad is out) then take a C-clamp and using one of the old pads push the plunger(the thing that shoves the brake pads) back so the new pads will go over the disk brake rotary, then install the new brake pads and put everthing back together just as it come apart. Now since you pushed the plunger in the caliper back with the c-clamp you didn't lose much brake fluid at all, so now you will not have to bleed the brakes just check to see if you need to add more brake fluid. Then when you get ready to move your truck remember to pump your brakes a few time before you move the truck, if you forget to pump your brakes the first time you hit your brakes you may not have any.Advice on front brake parts and replacing them?Go to any major auto store and they should sell repair manuals for most models. As for the brake parts, always go for top quality, since inferior brakes can cause accidents. #2 If you don't have any extinuating circumstances in the way which you drive your vehicle, factory parts are always the best way to go. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?

I have a 2003 mercedes. today i took my car for brake service. i only have 33000 miles on my car. all i needed was front brake pads. so the service guy now tells me that i will need front and back rotors also which amounts to over 1 thousand dollars because they say my rotors are completely worn out. I drive mostly freeways and never really brake hard or anything? could it be true? How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Your first mistake was to take your car in for brake service.

First get your car out of there. At home, jack up your car, take each wheel off and inspect the rotors. They will be right there in front of your face. Inspect your brake pads too. They should have at least 1.5mm on each side left of %26quot;meat%26quot;. Replace them if they don't. They cost around $7.50 for each wheel.

Run your hand over the rotors. They should be smooth without grooves or a high lip on the outside. A minor lip is ok. The rotors may be ventilated (have holes in them), and that's ok.

If you have grooves or a high lip, the rotor needs to be turned (resurfaced). Remove the rotor after removing the brake caliper. It will pull straight off. Take the rotor to an autoparts store and they will turn the rotor for about $10. If you have 4 bad ones, that will cost you $40. If the rotor is particularly bad, sometimes the store will not resurface them. Or maybe you can't find a place to do it. Or maybe you want to save even more money.

Take the rotor home, jack up the entire drive end of your car with both wheels off the ground. Jack each side, insert a jackstand, and then do the other side.

Put the rotor back on the spindle and secure it with the lug nuts. Don't put the wheel on yet. Start the car, put it in drive, and let the drive rotors rotate (turn) in the air. Take a belt sander and resurface the rotors as they are spinning. Wala, you saved an additional $10 per wheel. If the rotor is not from a drive wheel or the non-drive rotor will not fit the drive spindle, then you can mount the rotor on some other rotary table (like a record player) or mechanism and use the belt sander.

Sorry, but if you pay $1000 for new rotors, I will personally come over there and slap you.How often do i need to change rotors for my car?does not sound right....why can't the rotors be turned? How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Get a second opinion, it doesn't sound right. How often do i need to change rotors for my car? That guy is tring to rip you off, at the most the rotors may need turned, Take it somewhere elseHow often do i need to change rotors for my car?hes ******* with you. No way you wore out rotors in 30k unless youre doing alot of heavy racing. usually they last 100k+ miles. You can get em turned if theyre badly rutted. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Rotors don't last nearly as long as they used to because they outlawed asbestos brake pads. Asbestos brake pads used to take the wear; the semi-metallic pads and ceramic pads today wear the rotor down more. It's not entirely unbelievable that they could need new rotors. Of course, rotors for most cars cost under $50 apiece, so check the parts stores to see if you can get cheaper replacement rotors.

Also, it's likely that, although the rotors may be worn out of spec, they will work fine if you just replace the pads....problem is, the mercedes dealer won't do it, because, if the rotors are out of spec, they would be liable if anything happened, plus they couldn't warranty it. So if you can do a brake job yourself (it's really not that difficult, if you have a repair manual) just put new brake pads on and don't even worry about the rotors. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Sound like these joker are taking you to the bank. At 33k it should be your first brake change and only require rotor to be turn to give new brakes pad a fresh surface to mate on. Also, at that low mileage there should be plenty of meat(metal) to allow them to turn the rotor.

I'm a cheap person so I take my chances and just place new pad on without turning the rotors. also, i put lots of brake lube on back of pad to keep them quiet. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Have him give you a written estimate detailing every part he is going to change, and make sure he includes labor and hazardous waste removal, which he will have to charge you for, and then go get a second estimate like the other responders stated. After you get one and maybe for more proof a second estimate, contact the States Attorney for your state. This guy is definitely looking at making some quick money from you or someone. You can also look up the price of rotors by using www.advanceautoparts.com or any auto parts store. You can also contact the Mercedes dealer and see what they charge for the rotors. Most garages charge upwards of 50.00 per hour labor. I am unsure of your car, however most rotors can be changed in one hour per wheel, so figure at least 2 hours labor.

If your rotors wear out in 33,000 miles, you need to get a different vehicle. I have a 94 Ford truck that has been driven almost daily for over 3 years with my wife and I together running it over 65,000 miles and I still have not had to change the rotors. I have had the pads changed twice, but no rotors. How often do i need to change rotors for my car? There is no mileage recommendation on replacing rotors, when being serviced, they are measured with a micrometer for minimum thickness, if they are below this specification then they need to be replaced. On some domestic cars and trucks, the rotors are very thick in relation to the minimum spec and can be machined 2 or three times before replacing but I have found on Mercedes-Benz that this is not always true, and also they use a hard semi-metallic pad that wears rotors out even faster. If you are in doubt of the honesty of your mechanic, then a second opinion is helpful, and then you can ask him these questions: What is the minimum thickness? What are my rotors measuring? Can you show me? This will keep them honest. Also, if one side is worn and the other o.k., This can indicate other problems like calipers sticking or something.

Changing pads on ford focus 2004 model?

    Hello, Basically...

I need to replace my front brake pads on a ford focus 2004 model can any1 tell me how to do it ?

thanksChanging pads on ford focus 2004 model?sure.

jack up the car and take the wheel off.

It is a great idea to loosen the lug nuts to hand tight before jacking up the car.

Then take a socket ( from 13-15mm) and remove the 2 bolts holding on the caliper. * some models use a hex key instead of a socket wrench.

once you have the caliper off remove the old pads and secure the caliper. ( do not let it hang by the brake line)

take your new pads and lube the back of them. if you have shims (little pieces of metal around the inside of the caliper) leave them there.

now set the new pads aside and grab an old pad and the caliper.

put the old (1 pad) pad in the caliper and use a c clamp to push back the piston into the caliper.

once that is done simply take out the old pad, toss the new ones in and rebolt the caliper to the caliper bracket and put the wheel back on.

your done. here is a good go-by with pictures.

How often do i need to replace the brakes?

I purchased a full size conversion van last summer in July and in September I put some new brake pads on the front because they were grinded all the way down to nothing, then again in November i put another set on because that set has grinded down, and now i hear the grinding sound again when i hit the brakes ( i am talking about the front brakes, not sure about the back ones) so i know i need new front brakes again, and when my ex changes the brake pads i can see how they are paper thin, is this normal... my brother has the same van and only changes his once per year if that... what to do ?How often do i need to replace the brakes?Unless your driving this van a whole lot (as in about 120,000 miles per year or more) that is way too often. If you do a whole lot of towing or carry heavy loads the brakes will wear much faster (but not that fast), but probably you need new rotors. If your old rotors are bad it will really eat up your new brakes pads. Also, if you replace the rotors, buy high quality brake pads. If you do, you shouldn't need to worry about your brakes for quite a while. I would also check the rear brakes to make sure they are doing their share of the work. Naturally, if they are not working properly your front brakes will have much more work to do. If everything is working properly and you are not hard on brakes, you should get somewhere around 50,000 miles to 100,000 miles out of your brakes. One other thing, if the grinding sound you are describing is what I think it is, the rotors have been damaged. You should replace the brake pads well before that sound occurs. How often do i need to replace the brakes?do you ride with your foot on the brake?do you drive in stop and go traffic alot?better check the calipers, they could be hanging up.How often do i need to replace the brakes?try putting a better brand of brake pads on this time. i put some cheap pads on my van and they lasted no time. i put some more expensive ceramic pads on and they are lasting much longerHow often do i need to replace the brakes?sounds like you ride with your foot on the brake when your driving or doing an awful lot of braking to wear pads out that fast, make sure the calipers aren't sticking some when you have them replaced. How often do i need to replace the brakes?Usually, mechanics would need to take a look at it first-hand to detemine the cause. First, if you had to replace the pads that quick, there's definitely something wrong. Depending on how the vehicle is driven depends on the life of the brakes. Excessive, or say, moderate braking. i suggest maybe inspect the rotors and their condition, because grinding sound before getting brake pads replaced indicated the rotors, or discs might be damaged. since it was probably metal to metal, depending on the severity of what it caused, usually it would be taken to a mechanic shop (say a gas station) to have the rotor(s) turned, or resurfaced. In worst cases, replaced. Other factors might possibly be the brake lines need bleeding. But based on the information given, i believe the rotors might be the cause. hope you are able to fix the problem.

  • How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?

I bought an 18 month old VW golf in July this year. In the last 5 months it has done 3000 miles. The car was at the garage for something and they have told me my brake pads need replacing as are 95% worn. They are telling me they may have been upto 70% worn when I bought it (they do not have a figure but say if they were worn more than this they would have changed them). So they are saying I have worn my brake pads (front and back) at least 25% in 3000 miles or 5 months. I find this hard to believe and think they were worn when I was sold the car-is there any guidance on how long pads should last and what can I do about this???!!!How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?Typically brake pads should not wear that quickly, unless you ride your brake! Request that you see the old brake pads after they are done changing them or get a second opinion elsewhere. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?It depends on where you live and how you drive. Your brake pads should last at least 30,000 miles. But if you ride your brakes or live in a place with allot of hills, your brakes might wear out a little more quickly. You should get a second opinion from another mechanic, preferably one that only does brake work to see if you do need new ones. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?r u a boy racer if not i think they r changing them for no reasonHow quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?Like most answers here, the standards is 30K. But that's depending on the driver, if the driver previously likes to ride the brakes more often then, it wears off very quickly and vice versa. Also braking distribution is 60% front and 40% rear. So the wear is obviously less on the rear when the front is about ready to be swap with a new rotor. If you are mechanically inclined, check your manual for brake rotor thickness, if it is still good maybe you just need to resurface it.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?Pads wear differently depending on what kind of driving you do.

    City wears faster than highway.

    Average is around 50,000 miles.

I do work for some taxi and delivery drivers, and they need brakes every 20,000 miles.

One note: brakes work fine until they wear all their lining off,

How soon you replace them before that often depends on how motivated you are to do the job.

Someone selling a car will %26quot;let it slide%26quot; as long as there is some lining left. Someone repairing a car will recommend brakes if the lining is getting the least bit thin: brakes are an easy, high profit repair! How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?As a former automotive service shop owner I performed hundreds of brake jobs. I think the key point of your question is that you must find a reliable shop that you trust. Get to know the owner/manager and have all your work done there. That relationship is invaluable. It does no good to second guess advice on repair needs for your car. Unfortunately, some shops will do unnecessary work. Back to brakes: Pad wear is a function of driving type, quality of materials used and workmanship. Also, for rear brakes (pads or shoes) the rule of thumb is that they are replaced once for every two sets on the front. This is because weight transfer to the front of the car when braking causes the front pads to wear more quickly. For newer cars, such as yours, the original pads are the highest quality and good for a long time. For an easy driver who does long distance highway commutes, 70K or 80K for front pads is not unusual. City commute driving could yield 40K to 50K (these are typical numbers). Also all pads have a wear specification. The shop must know and state this. I think VW uses 1 millimeter (mm) as the wear limit. The shop should measure and state the remaining pad thickness (note: pads typically do not wear completely even, the measurement is taken from the thinnest section). Even though your post does not state the car mileage when purchased (some folks wrote that it now has 30K, but they are not careful readers), it reads like under 20K miles. It is unlikely that the OEM front brake pads would be worn out in that time, however it is possible. But there is no way the rear are also worn, for reasons stated above. My guess is that this shop is not playing straight. As another poster stated, there is a wide range of brake pad quality. When required, spend the money for the best to insure long life and quiet braking. I guess that Golf front pads are about $60. There may also be brake hardware kit. Hope that helps, Marc. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?The rate of wear depends on how much you ride the brake. Usually they should last a couple of years but if you overly use the brake and ride the pedal they could wear out sooner..How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?Hey sexy. No one wants to ever risk brakes problems or failing.. so are prepared to pay if the stealers (dealers) say they need changing. However I've known many instances where the stealers have been taking the p1ss, and brakes loads of life left.. sometimes as much as 90% life left in them.

Take you car to a specialist (I use Awesome GTi in Manchester).... they are cheaper, have professional time served mechanics working on your car (not a spotty trainee)... lower costs (lower overheads).

In the short term.... I'd get them double checked by another firm.

Also ask your garage to put their recommendations in writing before starting the work - if they are reluctant to do so it tells you something.... and if they do and prove to have not been honest in their assessment.. I'd inform local trading standards agency and tell them your taking it to the press.

I think I am being conned!!!?30K milesHow quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?No set guide lines but from you are saying the pads should have been changed before you bought the car. How many miles did the car have on it when you bought it? How was it driven? city mostly or highway mostly?

How they wear depends on your driving conditions. A lot of stop and go in the city vs. highway miles. Also depends on the pads themselves! Hard pads vs soft pads. Soft pads wear faster.

I change my pads every six months. Once a year I change my disc. But I have really hard driving conditions. All lot of driving on sandy, gravel, iron ore gravel, roads when dry. When raining same roads will be flooded up to hubs a lot of times. That wears out brakes quick.

Also have to remove self adjusters due to freezing up because of oxidizing from running in muddy water for extended distances. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?The brake shop would have little knowledge as to how much break pads existed when you purchased the car unless they looked at it. Brakes ware differently depending on weather, road conditions, use, and type of car. I have a large SUV that consumes front brake pads every 20,000 miles, while I have another car that can go 75,000 plus.

The best thing to do is check the pads for a small tab that indicates how much brake pad is left, and when they change the pads, as for the old ones so you can see how much pad is left. Any good shop would be willing to show you how to read a break pad. A bad shop that is going to rip you off will hid them.

If you hear a scraping sound when you drive, it may be an indication of a brake pad that has worn out.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?If you are concerned, get a second opinion on the issue.

The most difficult thing to do is finding a reputable mechanic/garage.

Brakes are an easy and often targeted up-sell in a garage.

Brakes are considered a %26quot;consumable%26quot; so it's possible the materials originally used for the brake fabric were not meant to last much longer than the miles you currently have.

Or, the previous owner might have driven the car hard -- jack rabbit starts/stops.

Consumables are the replacement parts which are expected to be worn-out/replace by the user -- therefore not reflecting badly on the car manufacturer.

Your vehicle is near 2 years old, might now be a good opportunity to shop for price on a brake repair.

Find a good price, take it in, and ask if the brake pads require changing (your second opinion).

Your repair cost will be greater if the pads do wear out, and you get steel on steel wear -- rotor replacement will be required. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?You do not say how many miles the car had done before you purchaced it! Brake pads can wear at differnt rates depending on if it is an automatic or manual, also type of driving ie town or motorway and also on the persons driving style. If it is the same garage who sold you the car is saying that within 3000 miles you have worn out the pads that is unfair and they should look at meeting some of the cost of new pads. Rule of thumb pads should last 15 to 20 k.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?The amount of wear on brake pads depends on how often the car is used. If you drive long distance every day, they will wear quicker than someone who drives locally. Go to the garage and ask to see the worn brake pads. There is not a lot you can do about this though because you don't know how worn they were when you bought the car.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?I have a 2005 Jetta GLi I bought new. I just had it in for a checkup, and they checked the brakes. The dealership reported the front had 90% life remaining after 15,000 miles and the rear were barely worn. I have heard anything from 30,000 miles for the front and 90,000 for the back to almost double that.

If the previous owner was really hard on the brakes or for some reason had poor quality pads installed, they will wear faster. If you have lost that much pad in 3000 miles, there is a serious problem with the brake system. If the brakes are worn almost out after less than 20,000 miles, I would make a warranty claim and get at least partial coverage. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?It depends on how you drive and the type of pads that were last installed. I have gone through a set of pads in a matter of a few months simply because I was driving around with more people in my car and driving through the city. So the excess weight as well as the constant stopping has caused my brakes to wear much faster.

Secondly there is no telling how rough the previous owner was on the car and how much pad was left. Some people drive %26quot;two-footed%26quot; which causes the brakes to be slightly engaged even though the driver may not be aware that he has his foot on the brake and the gas at the same time.

Third, if the car was 18 months old when you bought it and then you drove it another 5 months, that's almost 2 years which is about average for needing a brake job. Unless the brakes were covered by a warranty you just have to bite the bullet and get the work done or roll up your sleeves and put on the pads yourself. They are relatively easy to do on a VW.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?This scenario sounds totally possible. We're only talking about 25% since your purchase, and you have driven 5 months. It also sounds like the pads were never replaced by the original owner (since the vehicle is 18 months old and 70% wear- which sounds right).

The dealership should have replaced them before you bought the VW. I wouldn't buy a 70% used soda.....that means I only have 30% left for me!

If I were you, I would go back and talk to my salesman, and let him know what you've found. They should offer to replace them. I would start there first, because they knew they should have replaced them, but like all shady car sales people, they want to get the most money with the least amount of work.

Sounds like you may have been duped, but not by the repair shop. The dealership is the real culprit. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?tell them to show you the pads. see for yourself the %26quot; 95% %26quot; wear. brakes wont last forever, but they should last at least a year. heavy braking or dirt on the rotors will make them go bad faster. if you can do it yourself, go to auto store and get the lifetime warranty brake pads. then you just buy one set and when they go out, you just bring the old pads back in and get a new set for freeHow quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?Like Boxer said...30,000 miles is realistically the limit on pads. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?Brake wear is entirely subjective. Driving habits; roads; temp. etc. However; when the brake pads are repl. It`s important to make sure the rear br. are working 100% . as appx. 70% of your braking comes fr. the fr. brs. you need ALL your brakes working efficiantly. Even bad shocks effects br. wear. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?very well done to marccroft he has answerd your question spot on .i have been in the car repair buisness for 25 years and i hear questions like this day in day out but it all comes down to one thing....YOU. constant quetions asked and the anwser that applys to most is why my tyres, brakes do not last as long as when i had the car from new...anwser drive the car the same as when it was new and they will..simpleHow quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?why don't you take it to a mechanic for a brake checkHow quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?Brake pad wear factors are down to:

    -Driver usage

    -Quality of Brake Pads

One way to tell if your brake pads are worn is you hear that %26quot;screeching%26quot; noise everytime you brake. That is usually metal grinding on metal.

Of course, the only way to find out if you're being ripped off or not is to look at it yourself.

Jack your car up, use air-tools to take the wheel off, then examine your brakes, if you can't do that, then you should be able to see through the gaps of your rims and see the thickness left in them.

Brake pads last on average 6-12 months depending on quality and driver. I have ceramic brakes on my SUV and they're still good from last year.

The Garage was being nice checking your brakes for you. I don't think they're ripping you off. If it's due, then it's due a change. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?this sounds like reasonable wear. wear depends on your driving and braking style, the quality of the pads, and the weight of your car. I would go through pads every 7000 miles in my Cadillac mostly because i used the cheap *** $20 pads and I drive the car fast (which means I brake hard). You did not own the car for 18 months of it's life, how do you know how it was driven? If I had a lease, I'd drive the sh*t out of the car since I didn't have to keep it.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?It really depends on several things

    1. The quality of the pads installed last time

    2. The quality of the brake system in comparison to the weight of the car, and

    3. Your driving habits.

My vehicle has a brake system designed for a car 300 lbs lighter, so the brake pads run out pretty often. But if I replace them with cheap pads from the local auto parts store, I barely get 6 months out of them.
