How can i tell what kind of brake system my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has.?

i need to change the brake pads in the front but when i called the auto parts store they asked me what brake system? ATE or Akebono i dont know aint that handy to just tell. can anyone give me any info its a 2000 JGC Laredo 6 cylinder. How can i tell what kind of brake system my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has.?The ATE (Alfred Teves) are the OEM brakes pads, shoes and calipers on 1999 and later Grand Cherokees. There was a TSB on front brakes on certain Grand Cherokees that had issues with warping rotors causing vibration, excessive wear and noise.

For those vehicles the front brake pads, rotors and calipers were replaced with Akebono parts.

There are things to look for under the vehicle but the easiest thing to do is to go to your local dealer ask the service manager or parts counter to check and see if the parts were replaced, they will need your VIN number. They can also check to see if you have one of the models that had the defective parts although most were 1999 models. If they were not changed you have ATE.How can i tell what kind of brake system my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has.?Ignore the useless drivel in most of the above posts.

Your best bet is to pull off a front wheel and look at what you have. If yours are still original on a 2000, then you have the crappy Teves calipers. Jeep had many brake issues on the early WJ jeeps. Our '99 was upgraded to Akebono. The calipers and pads are visually much different. Not sure if there is a name stamped on the caliper or not, however you can examine a set of pads and recognize the correct one when you get to the store, or search some sites like Autozone for them and look at their pictures. If this helps, here is a list of the factory part numbers:

I dont know what they were telling you, that makes no sense.

you have a hyraulic power assist brake system. judging from the search I did at Kragen's website, you should have disc brakes front and rear. How can i tell what kind of brake system my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has.?Your system is, as stated by others, a 4 wheel disc brake system with ABS. The two choices you were given are two different suppliers not two systems. ATE is a big supplier in Europe and Akebono is a Japanese supplier. Given those choices I would choose ATE because I have owned several German cars which used that brand as factory brand.

Hope that helped you decide. How can i tell what kind of brake system my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has.?The vehicle has standard ABS brakes but has a problem with warping rotors similar to Chrysler products. If you have this problem make sure to clean the flanges that hold your lug studs before re-installing the rotors. Then torque the lug nuts evenly or they will warp again. How can i tell what kind of brake system my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has.?disc or drum brake, for disc you need brake pads, for drum you need brake shoes,

go to partsamerica.com, put in your car, and all the brake stuff show upHow can i tell what kind of brake system my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has.?The VIN will not tell you. They put two different kinds of braking systems on the grand cherokees. if you have a big wire type spring on the outside of the caliper that holds it to the bracket then that is the Continental Teves system. If you have a bracket that totally surrounds the caliper then you have the Akebono system. How can i tell what kind of brake system my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has.?well, how do you determine what kind of break system anything has? you slap it in the rear (hehe, i love when people slap my rear) than you have to look through the hole, the MUFFLER (not the rectom, you silly beastee) and then you just read the book by william shakespear and listen to some jeffree fuc*ing star and babe, you got yourself the answer of your question *emoticon*

Depenin' oh how she stops will till ya wat kinda braks ya gots. How can i tell what kind of brake system my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has.?The most accurate way to figure this out is to call the parts department at your Jeep dealer. Give them your VIN (vehicle identification number) and get a price for the pads. Tell them that you heard there are two different types, and ask them which one you have. Then you can either buy from them or shop elsewhere.
